Some stories are written because an author has always dreamed of becoming a writer. Others are written because life leaves behind something that demands to be expressed.

For Tanishka Chugera, writing was never part of a carefully planned career path. She was first a daughter, a wife, a mother of two, and someone whose life was deeply rooted in her family. It was the sudden loss of her mother in June 2022 that changed the direction of her life and eventually led her to write her debut book, BEYOND Goodbye.

What began as private letters written to her mother during the darkest days of grief gradually became something much larger: a memoir about love, loss, spirituality, healing, and the ways in which a relationship can continue even after physical separation.

A Mother-Daughter Bond at the Heart of Everything

To understand BEYOND Goodbye, it is essential to understand the relationship that inspired it.

Tanishka describes her mother as far more than a parent. She was her best friend, confidante, and the person she could turn to for almost anything. Even after Tanishka married and became a mother herself, that closeness never changed. Her mother remained deeply involved in her everyday life and in the lives of her grandchildren.

The values her mother lived by also became an important part of Tanishka’s own identity. She remembers her as someone who believed in “simple living and high thinking,” a woman who found happiness in ordinary moments, particularly when her family was together.

Rather than preserving one particular memory of her mother, Tanishka wanted to preserve the feeling of who she was: her warmth, selflessness, devotion to her family, and unconditional love.

That desire became one of the emotional foundations of BEYOND Goodbye.

She wanted readers who never had the opportunity to meet her mother to somehow feel that they knew her after turning the final page. In doing so, she also hopes her mother’s story encourages readers to look at their own relationships differently and appreciate the people they love while they are still beside them.

When Writing Became a Way to Survive Grief

After her mother’s sudden passing, Tanishka found herself carrying emotions she did not know how to express.

The loss had happened so unexpectedly that the reality of her mother’s absence was difficult to comprehend. The person who had always been there was suddenly no longer physically present.

At night, Tanishka began writing letters to her.

Those letters became a private space where she did not have to be strong. She could tell her mother that she was angry, confused, heartbroken, or simply unable to understand what had happened. She could ask questions that had no answers.

Initially, the letters were a way of refusing the silence.

Gradually, they became a way of healing.

Through writing, Tanishka discovered that although her physical relationship with her mother had changed, the love and connection between them had not disappeared. Those private conversations eventually became part of the emotional foundation of BEYOND Goodbye.

The book, therefore, did not begin as a publishing project. It began as a daughter trying to speak to her mother.

Finding Meaning in the Smallest Signs

As Tanishka moved through grief, she began experiencing moments that carried deep personal meaning for her.

Among them, butterflies became particularly significant.

One experience stands out. It was her first birthday without her mother, and she was in Dubai. Birthdays had always been made special by her mother, so her absence felt especially painful.

At a restaurant, Tanishka looked up and saw a ceiling filled with butterflies.

The following day, another butterfly appeared unexpectedly, this time as part of the decoration on an appetizer at a buffet. When she asked about it, she was told that it had not been specially planned for her.

To someone else, these events might simply have been coincidences. Tanishka does not claim otherwise. But during a period of profound grief, they brought her comfort.

They reminded her of her mother.

For Tanishka, these moments became an important part of understanding how healing can sometimes begin. Not necessarily through definitive answers, but through allowing ourselves to find meaning in the experiences that speak personally to us.

From “Why Me?” to “What Can I Do With This Love?”

Perhaps the most significant transformation in Tanishka’s journey was the change in the questions she asked herself.

In the beginning, she repeatedly wondered why this had happened.

Why her mother?

Why so suddenly?

Why her?

But eventually, she realised that no answer to those questions could change what had happened.

Through meditation, writing, spirituality, and the experiences she encountered during her healing journey, her focus slowly shifted.

Instead of asking only what she had lost, she began thinking about everything her mother had given her.

And eventually, a different question emerged:

What can I do with all this love?

That question became central to BEYOND Goodbye.

Tanishka could not change her mother’s death, but she could decide what she would create from the pain. She could carry her mother’s values into the way she raised her children. She could live with greater kindness and gratitude. She could share her experience with people who were struggling with their own grief.

The book became part of that answer.

It became a way of transforming pain into purpose.

Learning That Healing Does Not Mean Forgetting

For Tanishka, healing did not arrive as one dramatic breakthrough.

It happened gradually.

Initially, she believed healing might mean reaching a point where she no longer missed her mother so intensely. Over time, she realised that this was not what healing meant at all.

She did not need to leave her mother behind to continue living.

She could carry her with her.

In her memories. In the values she inherited. In the way she raises her children. In the things she says and does. In the person she continues to become.

This changed her understanding of grief.

Grief was no longer something she needed to “finish.” It became something she learned to make space for.

Even now, there are moments when she misses her mother terribly. But sadness and gratitude can exist together. So can grief and joy. Missing someone does not mean that life has to stop.

That understanding lies at the heart of the book’s message.

Beyond Goodbye

Before her mother’s passing, Tanishka’s relationship with her was physical and beautifully ordinary. She could call her, hug her, sit beside her, ask her advice, or simply enjoy having her around.

After losing her, she had to discover another way of relating to her.

Today, that relationship exists through memories, prayer, dreams, meaningful signs, and quiet moments of connection. Tanishka also sees her mother reflected in herself, particularly in the way she mothers her own children and carries forward the values she was taught.

None of this replaces physical presence.

Tanishka is clear about that.

She would still give anything to have her mother beside her again. But the spiritual connection has given her a way to continue loving her without feeling that the love has nowhere to go.

That is the meaning behind the title BEYOND Goodbye.

Goodbye was not the end of her relationship with her mother. It was the beginning of learning how to love her in a different way.

The Courage to Write the Hardest Pages

Writing a memoir based on personal grief comes with a different kind of difficulty. There is no emotional distance between the writer and the story.

For Tanishka, the hospital chapters were among the hardest to write.

Returning to those final days meant revisiting the shock, helplessness, and pain surrounding her mother’s passing. There were moments when she questioned whether those memories were simply too personal to share.

But she ultimately realised that removing the painful parts would mean removing the truth.

The hope and spirituality that emerge later in BEYOND Goodbye only have meaning because readers understand where that journey began.

Tanishka chose vulnerability because she knows that somewhere, another person may be sitting in a hospital corridor, receiving devastating news, or trying to understand how life can possibly continue after losing someone they love.

If that reader can find a sense of recognition in her story and think, “Someone understands this,” then sharing those difficult memories becomes worthwhile.

A Book That Does Not Tell People to “Move On”

One of the strongest messages Tanishka hopes to offer grieving readers is also one of the simplest: there is no correct way to grieve.

She would never tell someone who has recently lost a loved one to simply “move on” or “be strong.”

Sometimes, she believes, getting through one day is enough.

She encourages people to give themselves permission to feel whatever they are feeling, without comparing their journey to anyone else’s.

Healing does not mean forgetting.

A person can laugh again, celebrate again, dream again, and build a beautiful life while continuing to carry someone they have lost in their heart.

The pain may change with time. The love does not have to disappear with it.

In this sense, Tanishka does not see BEYOND Goodbye as an instruction manual for grief. She sees it as companionship: a quiet reminder to someone struggling that they are not alone and that they do not have to know what the rest of their life will look like. Sometimes, they only need to take it one day at a time.

A Daughter’s Love, Preserved in Pages

At its core, BEYOND Goodbye is a memoir, but Tanishka sees it as something more personal than that.

It is a love letter from a daughter to her mother.

If her mother could read the book today, Tanishka says there is one thing she would want her to understand: she wrote it because she loved her too much to let her story end with her passing.

She wants her mother to see that everything she gave her continues through her and through her children.

Her love. Her strength. Her values. Her devotion to family.

“I would tell her, ‘Mom, look what your love created.’”

That sentence captures the journey behind the book.

A daughter who once could not imagine how she would live without her mother eventually found a way to transform that absence into something meaningful. Her mother’s life inspired her to write. Her absence pushed her to search deeper within herself. And the love between them gave her the courage to share their story with people she may never meet.

More than anything, she hopes her mother would be proud.

Because BEYOND Goodbye may carry Tanishka Chugera’s name on its cover, but emotionally, she does not see it as belonging to her alone.

It belongs to both of them.

It is Tanishka’s story.

But it is also her mother’s legacy.

And perhaps that is the most powerful idea at the heart of BEYOND Goodbye: sometimes, saying goodbye does not mean a story has ended. Sometimes, it is where another chapter of love begins.
