Singapore-based fashion e-commerce platform Zilingo’s CEO Ankiti Bose has filed a $100 million defamation lawsuit against Indian investor and advertising executive Mahesh Murthy. The lawsuit is in response to an article written by Murthy that was published on a media outlet in January 2022, which allegedly defamed Bose.
The article reportedly contained false and misleading statements about Bose. Including claims of financial impropriety and unethical business practices. According to the lawsuit, the article has caused irreparable harm to Bose’s reputation and has negatively impacted her personal and professional life.
Zilingo, founded in 2015 by Bose and Dhruv Kapoor, is a fashion and lifestyle marketplace that connects sellers with consumers in Southeast Asia. The company has raised over $300 million in funding and has a valuation of over $1 billion.
And this is not the first time Mahesh Murthy has faced legal action. In 2018, he was arrested for allegedly sexually harassing a woman on social media. He was subsequently released on bail and the case is still ongoing.
Also, Bose’s lawsuit against Murthy is another example of the increasing trend of defamation lawsuits. This is being filed by high-profile individuals. And companies against individuals who make false or defamatory statements in the media or online.
Moreover, the rise of social media and the internet has made it easier for individuals to disseminate false information, and lawsuits like this one are seen as a way to hold those individuals accountable for their actions.
