The Delhi High Court has warned that consuming packaged drinking water of inferior quality can be fatal. The court issued the warning while hearing a plea filed by a bottled water manufacturer seeking a stay on the cancellation of its license.
The court noted that drinking water of substandard quality could lead to serious health problems and even death. It emphasized the need for strict quality control measures to ensure the safety of consumers.
The court also criticized the practice of selling packaged drinking water without proper labeling and warned that such products could be potentially hazardous.
The plea was filed by a bottled water manufacturer whose license was canceled by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) for failing to comply with quality control standards.
The court refused to grant a stay on the cancellation of the license and directed the manufacturer to comply with the quality control standards prescribed by the FSSAI.
The court’s warning comes at a time when concerns over the quality of packaged drinking water are on the rise in India. Several cases of contaminated bottled water have been reported in recent years, leading to calls for stricter regulation and enforcement.
Experts have emphasized the importance of choosing bottled water from reputable brands and checking the label for information on the source and quality of the water.
Consumers are also advised to check the seal and packaging of the bottled water before purchasing to ensure that it has not been tampered with.
