Union Minister for Law and Justice, Kiren Rijiju, has lauded the recent order by Chief Justice of India, Justice NV Ramana, and Justice DY Chandrachud. The order directed state governments to provide financial assistance to the families of advocates who have succumbed to COVID-19.
The move has been hailed as a heart-warming action by many in the legal fraternity. The order came after a plea was filed by the Supreme Court Bar Association, seeking help for lawyers affected by the pandemic. The Bar Association had requested the court to direct state governments to provide financial aid of Rs. 3 lakhs each to the families of deceased advocates.
Rijiju praised the order, saying that it showed the judiciary’s sensitivity towards the plight of those affected by the pandemic. He further added that the legal community has been working tirelessly to ensure justice for all. And the government is committed to supporting them in their time of need.
The pandemic has hit the legal fraternity hard, with many lawyers losing their lives due to COVID-19. The Bar Council of India has reported that over 800 lawyers have died due to the virus in the last year. The financial assistance provided by the state governments will help ease the burden on the families of these deceased advocates.
The legal community has also welcomed the order, with many expressing their gratitude towards the judiciary. The Supreme Court Bar Association has thanked the court for taking cognizance of the issue. And issuing the order. The Bar Council of India has also welcomed the move and called for the implementation of the order in a timely and efficient manner.
