An Income Tax Officer has been arrested by the CBI for allegedly throwing phones in the Sabarmati river to help a colleague in a bribery case. The accused officer was identified as Nitin Gupta.
According to the CBI, Gupta was caught on camera throwing two mobile phones in the Sabarmati river in Ahmedabad. The phones were reportedly used to communicate with a businessman who was being investigated for tax evasion.
The businessman had allegedly offered a bribe to a team of Income Tax officials, including Gupta’s colleague, in exchange for dropping the investigation against him. The CBI had been tipped off about the bribery attempt and was conducting a sting operation.
